Eagle Heights Spanish Immersion School Presents Elders’ Wisdom, Children’s Song™ with Smithsonian Folkways recording artist, Larry Long
Minneapolis, MN – Eagle Heights Spanish Immersion School will host a community celebration honoring four elders in the Eagle Heights Spanish Immersion School music room on Thursday, May 24, 2012, 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM. Upper Campus address: 13400 Staring, Eden Prairie, MN 55347. Free and open to the public.
The Elder Wisdom, Children’s Song™ community celebration is brought to you by Community Celebration of Place (501-C-3) in partnership with Eden Prairie Schools (EPS) and the West Metro Education Program (WMEP).
Long, Executive Director of Community Celebration of Place and creator of Elders’ Wisdom, Children’s Song, has been working with 4th grade students at Eagle Heights Spanish Immersion School to collectively write songs and gather recitations that honor the life stories of the following community elders:
- Wilhelmina Williams: Grew up in the days of Jim Crow segregation in Memphis, Tennessee. Marched with Dr. Martin Luther King on the day of his assassination.
- Juanita Tukrook: First Nation Inupiak elder. Born in Fairbanks, Alaska in a small village called Tanana along the Arctic slope.
- Khalid Sguiri: Grew up in Rabat, Morocco. Citizen of the United States. Works as a custodian at Eagle Heights Elementary School.
- Señora Bea Reyes: Born in Andres San Malici, Venezuela. Paraprofessional for the Eden Prairie School District.
