Forest Elementary School Presents Elders’ Wisdom, Children’s Song™ with Smithsonian Folkways recording artist, Larry Long
Crystal, MN – Forest Elementary School will host a community celebration honoring four community elders on Thursday, December 13th , 2012 from 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM. The Elder Wisdom, Children’s Song™ community celebration is brought to you by Community Celebration of Place (501-C-3) in partnership with Robbinsdale Area Schools and the West Metro Education Program (WMEP).
Larry Long, Executive Director of Community Celebration of Place and creator of Elders’ Wisdom, Children’s Song, Anthony Galloway, Learning Programs Specialist for WMEP, Janine Brinkman Gagnon, Classroom Music Teacher, Paula Wagener-Lutz, Classroom Music Teacher, and Mark Hoornbeek, School Social Worker, have been working with 4th grade students and staff at Forest Elementary School to collectively write songs and gather recitations that honor the life stories of the following community elders:
Maria de Jesus Vega Carillo: Born in Naired, Mexico. Single mother of three children. Immigrated to the United States in 1996. Her dream, fulfilled, was to build a home for her parents back in Mexico.
Avaloy Mitchell: Born in Kingston, Jamaica. Olympic athlete. Single mother of four children. Worked as a personal care assistant until she had to quit work to care for one of her ailing children.
Kellie Kreller: Born in Scotland. Irish by heritage. Mother of three boys. World Traveler. Volunteered with orphans in Russia. Successful family business entrepreneur.
