Valley View Elementary School Presents Elders’ Wisdom, Children’s Song™ with Smithsonian Folkways recording artist, Larry Long

Minneapolis, MN – Valley View Elementary School will host a community celebration honoring three community elders on Thursday, December 6, 2012 from 5:30 PM – 7:00 PM. The Elder Wisdom, Children’s Song™ community celebration is brought to you by Community Celebration of Place (501-C-3) in partnership with Columbia Heights Schools and the West Metro Education Program (WMEP).

Larry Long, Executive Director of Community Celebration of Place and creator of Elders’ Wisdom, Children’s Song, and Anthony Galloway, Student Learning Programs Specialist for WMEP, has been working with 4th grade students and staff at Valley View Elementary School to collectively write songs and gather recitations that honor the life stories of the following community elders:

Valley View Elder's Wisdom

Namgyal Dorjee: Born in Orissa, India. Tibetan refugee. Fulbright Scholar. Husband. Father. President of Tibetan American Foundation of Minnesota.

Marlaine Szurek: Born in Cleveland, Ohio. City Councilwoman of Columbia Heights, Minnesota for five years. Direct descendant of Samuel B. Morse, who invented the Morse code, and William Floyd, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Wife. Mother. Grandmother.

Fernando Guerrero: Born in Morales, Mexico. Came to the United States when he was 18 years old. Husband. Father. Construction worker.

Cashton, WI - 8th Grade Leadership will host a Cashton Community Celebration in honor of Mrs. Marian Sullivan Schwarz’s 104th Birthday at the Cashton Community Hall on Wednesday, October 18, 2017, 5:00 PM - 9:00 PM.  

Community Celebration of Place is partnering with Little Free Library on Saturday, May 21, in Minneapolis, Minnesota for the first-ever Little Free Library Festival.

Join highly acclaimed author Kent Nerburn and Larry Long, Executive Director of Community Celebration of Palce for an evening of songs, stories and music.

During 2017-2018, it is a primary program of Community Celebration of Place to transfer their collection into archives that will be open to the public for generations to come
